Does your terminal support Apple VAS and Google Smart Tap?

It does if its vendor, or for a payment terminal its payment provider, documents it. This directory lists the models with that documentation, each linked to its source, so you can check your hardware before you buy.

Readers and terminals here support Apple VAS, Google Smart Tap or Samsung VAS. A capable reader is one half of the tap; the other is an NFC-enabled pass. Every Stell pass can also carry a QR code or barcode, so identification works on the scanners you already own.

This directory is compiled from public sources and may contain errors or be out of date. A missing badge means support is not publicly documented, not that the hardware cannot do it. On payment terminals, pass reading depends on the payment provider's software, so a model listed under one provider may not read passes with another. Verify support with your hardware or payment provider before purchasing.

How a terminal reads a pass.

When a phone reaches the reader, Apple Wallet answers with Apple VAS and Google Wallet with Google Smart Tap. Either way, the phone returns the pass's member identifier encrypted, readable only by a reader that holds the merchant's key.

On a payment terminal, pass reading runs in the payment provider's software, not in the hardware alone. The same model can read passes under one provider and not under another, which is why the directory lists payment terminals per provider.

A supported reader still needs configuring: the merchant's keys loaded on the reader, and passes issued with NFC enabled. On iPhone, NFC passes need Apple's VAS entitlement, which Apple grants after reviewing the use case. Stell is a VAS Provider and prepares that request with the merchant.

How do I know if my payment terminal supports Apple VAS or Google Smart Tap?
Find your model in the directory and check which protocols are documented for it. On a payment terminal, pass reading runs in the payment provider's software, so check the entry for your provider. A model that is missing is not publicly documented, which is not the same as unsupported, so ask your hardware or payment provider.
Is a supported reader all I need?
No. The reader needs the merchant's keys, the passes must be NFC-enabled, and on iPhone that takes Apple's VAS entitlement. Every Stell pass can also carry a QR code or barcode, which works on the scanners you already own.
